Monthly Evening Lecture Programs
On 28th September 2016, Mr. P. R. Iyer, NIQR Life Member & Retired AGM, NTPC & Mr. Saswat Das, Roof Top Solar Cell Manufacturer delivered a lecture on "Solar PV power and its Prospects" at NIQR Conference Hall.
Dr. P Ramesh, Vice Chairman - NIQR Chennai Branch presided over the lecture and welcomed the members present and Mr. C. V. Gowri Sankar, Secretary NIQR Chennai Branch spoke about NIQR and its activities and introduced the speakers.
Mr. P. R Iyer gave an overview of today's energy scenario and was confident solar power may become cheaper than coal by 2023 with depleting stock of coal.
Mr. Saswat Das straightaway advocated everyone should concentrate on reducing power consumption and gave many tips. He gave different patterns of energy consumption with Industries consuming 40% and domestic & agriculture 60%. He also gave pattern of different fuels used for producing electricity. It was very interesting to see that a large amount of coal energy is used to get a very small output of light energy at the user point. It was dramatic variation in light output (and heat loss) with various models of bulbs. He advocated the use of energy efficient equipments to save on natural resources.
Mr. Das then took up the solar power generation and the working principle and explained the process flow in three solar models, namely mono crystalline, poly crystalline and thin film. He dwelt at length about the net meter and its commercial and societal pros & cons. He broke the myth about the seasonal variation of output; high temperature summer months actually do not give high outputs. He concluded his lecture giving details about the cost structure of solar power generation.
The Q&A session was very lively and informative and Dr. P Ramesh summed up the proceedings – he said the audience felt happy to have some myths broken by the lecture. Mr. A Pradeep, EC Member, NIQR Chennai Branch proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. P. Rajamony Iyer, fondly called P R Iyer did B.E., Electrical Engineering in R.E.C, Warangal and Business Management in Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad. He had an excellent professional career; the highlights being set up of systems and processes for materials management for 6x600 MW power plant built by KSK Mahanadi Power at Nariyara, Chattisgarh, and reorganization of inventory control for Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation (N.J.P.C).
Mr. Saswat Das, a Marine Engineer by education and experience, had 15 years of shipping industry experience with Maersk - A. P. Moller. Worked in various capacities from Engineer to Technical manager and also as a security Advisor (SSA). Currently he is the Director of Sunmeister Energy Pvt. Ltd which is engaged in Energy Auditing, Designing and Integration of Solar/hybrid power plants .
